About Aquatic Abilities

Aquatic Abilities offers private instruction for children and adults with a primary focus of water safety, stroke development, and aquatic fitness. Instruction is provided by Emily Young, a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist with experience working with individuals of all ability levels both in and out of the pool!

Aquatic classes occur within 30, 45, and 60 minute time windows and take place at your residence or local pool. The instructor provides all necessary equipment for lessons.

I specialize in "learn to swim" techniques that emphasize introductory swim skills, safety strategies, and early stroke development. Please contact me to discuss options for more advanced swimming instruction and competitive technique development or coaching.

A Bit About Emily:

I began swim lessons at six months old and have loved the water ever since! My participation continued from "Mommy and Me" swim lessons to a neighborhood league, competitive year-round teams, and high school-college participation. I began teaching lessons along this journey and have had the opportunity to instruct private, group, and "Mommy and Me" lessons since then.

I am grateful to be able to link this passion with my practice as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist. When I'm not in the pool, I'm working within the field of neurologic rehabilitation, helping individuals learn about alternative ways to pursue their hobbies and passions after experiencing traumatic accidents and neurologic conditions.
Recreational Therapy helps to provide me with a holistic perspective and unique approach as a swim instructor. The values at the foundation of my work include outcome-focused care and instruction, an individualized approach, and a focus on functional skills that benefit other activities outside of the pool.

In my free time, I swim weekly for exercise and otherwise love beaches and our amazing Texas rivers and springs! I also generally enjoy being outside while on walks with my two dogs, cycling, hiking, and traveling to new places. There are so many beautiful things to see and experience!

I'm always looking for new and exciting opportunities. Let's connect.

Benefits of Aquatic Involvement

  • Water safety: Drowning is a leading cause of death for children

  • Confidence: Learning at a young age can help prevent fear of the water that can last a lifetime

  • Increased flexibility: Buoyancy reduces the effects of gravity allowing for a greater range of motion

  • Increased strength at a low impact: Water is 600-700 times more resistive than air!

  • It's fun: Safety in the pool leads to safe fun at beaches, water parks, birthday parties and more.
